Farewell the Jamestown Bridge

I first crossed the "old" Jamestown Bridge on one of my first visits to America in 1992 - just before it was closed. It didn't exactly inspire confidence as it creaked and swayed in the breeze and with the heavy trucks pounding up and down it. Next time I visited I was on the new bridge alongside the old one and that was that - I thought. But today not a lot of work got done locally. Everyone got to their best vantage points and hung on in the brisk and cool Northerly breeze. Our original plan to paddle up to the edge of the 3000ft exclusion zone was set aside in the 20 knot gusts. At 11:00 Eastern Daylight Time 18th April 2006 - the old Jamesotwn Bridge - completed in 1940 and closed since 1992 was imploded with a controlled blast.
